Great Season Comes To An End for the Irish Ladies!

The win against France secured 13th place for us, although dissapointed with the results of some performances we can be very proud of ourselves. Hopefully EUC 2011 will lure more European ladies teams to attend WUGC 2012. There is no doubt that Irish Ladies Ultimate is on the up, to secure not only our first but 3 wins at the World Championships is a huge achievement (we've only gone and done it!) It has given fire in the belly for more.........

Day 6 - Irish Ladies

Ireland v France
16-14

Well if the crowd wanted drama they certainly got it! We met the French Ladies at EUC07 beating them in the group stages and losing to them in our final placing game. We had played them twice since with a loss at Tom's Tourney 08 and a semi-final win against them at Windmill Windup 08. Our game history until now being Ireland 2, France 2!

So much of the game is a blur to me, after trading with only one point between us all through, the French took half-time (8-7). We were resiliant in the second half and broke even before going 14-12 up. At this stage the time cap had gone and it was a game to 16. The French then came back to make it 14-14. A 22 minute point ensued with anxious offense on both sides which failed just short of the end zone for us time after time - nail biting stuff! After giving the disc away some huge D's gave us the chance to try it again. Eventually in the 22nd minute we made it 15-14. The D line came on and Yiv got a hand block close to our endzone. No time for nerves now...Liz threw the winning score to Fiona Mernagh. We were absoutely buzzing. It was the closest and most spirited encounter we've had with the French Ladies to date and no doubt doubt its only the beginning of a fruitful history.

Day 5 - Irish Ladies

Ireland v Sweden
12-15

Having finshed the group stages we needed a win against Sweden to finish in the 9 to 12 bracket. Starting well we needed one more point to take half-time. This point alluded us as we made rash mistakes on offense trying to finish it off. The Swedes ended up taking the half. We traded for a few points and the Swedes ran away with a game that easily could have been ours. We were dissapointed to say the least.

Ireland v Mexico
17-9

We were now playing for 13th position in the bottom three Round Robin with Mexico and France. This was never a close game but Mexico had certainly improved upon their first performance with us, noticabely their handlers. They were reminiscent of the Irish Ladies Team at WUGC 04; they have heaps of potential! A tough day, but we now had one win under our belts in the Round Robin.

Day 4 - Irish Ladies

Ireland v USA
7-17

Today we mixed up our lines because after meeting such tough opposition our O line were playing the majority of our points. We played with great fluidity and racked up some beautiful scores against the eventual World Champions! One particular point came from Dee who caught it behind a mallay of people and then followed it by scoring the next point al. A very spirited team to play against, we received these compliments from their Captain, Gwen Ambler.

"Fury had played against the Irish women four years ago at the 2004 WUGC in Finland, so I can attest first hand to how much better the team is now. Four years ago, the Irish were best remembered for their youth, cheers, and winning the Spirit Award. Now, that team has matured into a squad that can consistently score points against the best teams in the world. Our 17-7 score against them this year felt like a completely different game than the 17-1 match we had in Finland. Benefiting from a coach (Lucy Barnes, formerly of Brute Squad) and the luxury of try-outs and regular training sessions, this team now takes itself seriously. Hopefully the women's scene in the country continues to expand and get better in the coming years."
